We are Here For You!

There are many benefits to participating in psychotherapy groups, but now more than ever groups can help children and parents navigating the challenges of everyday life. CGC has  groups being offered via ZOOM and in person. All in person groups meet at CGC, 103 West Broad Street, Stamford. 

If your child is already receiving services from CGC, please ask your clinician for more information. If your child is not already in treatment with CGC, please call 203-324-6127 for more information and to schedule an initial intake appointment. Space is limited.

 

Social Skills Group

This group will run for a 10-week cycle, and is a closed group once started. Group will provide a safe therapeutic environment for kids between the ages of 7 and 9 years old to learn and implement social skills through the use of discussion, games and activities. The overall goal for group is for children to learn ways to express their thoughts/feelings in a healthy way and to support them in building strategies for increasing social connections. Topics which will be addressed will include: active listening, verbal and non-verbal communication, friendship, and managing conflict.

Middle School Process Group

This is a group for kids in 7th and 8th grade looking for a safe space to share different perspectives, get support, give/receive encouragement and learn different skills. This unstructured environment will allow people to increase their level of self-awareness and learn how to relate to others. Members are welcome and encouraged to bring topics of their choice. Some examples include: challenges with peer and/or family relationships, fitting in, new expectations, coping skills, conflict resolution, self-expression, boundary setting, self-esteem, gratitude, compassion, identity, academic stress and challenges with transitions. Group will be conducted through talk, writing, play and/or creative outlets depending on the needs of the members.

Coping with High School Anxiety Group

This group for 14 to 18 year olds provides a safe therapeutic environment in order to build coping skills to combat social anxiety and to change unhelpful patterns of thinking. Topics covered include: challenging your self-critical voice, exploring the impact of anxiety on functioning, and expanding your toolbox of skills when it comes to managing anxiety.

Parent Support Groups

This group is meant to provide parents with a safe and supportive environment to explore topics related to their child’s treatment. Themes may include issues related to school, adjusting to parenting roles, managing behaviors at home or stigma related to engaging in therapy and mental health services.

Day/Time:  Mondays 6:00 PM – 6:45 PM via ZOOM

 

Building Your Toolbox

This group provides a safe and therapeutic environment for children ages 5 to 7 to practice skills to benefit their behaviors and develop additional skills through the use of play, games, and activities in a group setting. During their experience, each child will be able to explore and express their emotions with support from a positive social group environment.  Each week children will add to their “Tool Box” and utilize these helpful tools during everyday difficulties. The overall objective is to improve participants’ use of coping skills and emotion regulation through group therapy. Topics that will be addressed include: understanding and responding to intense emotions, managing impulses, and utilizing their tool box effectively.

Building Relationships Group

This interpersonal group provides children in Middle School (ages 11-13) a therapeutic setting in which to discuss challenges related to school, family, friends, and more. The overall objective is to help group members feel more confident in their abilities to manage strong emotions and difficult situations. This group therapy format provides members with the opportunity to practice identifying and communicating their emotional and relational needs in a safe and supportive environment.

Child Autism Group

This group provides a neurodiversity affirming space for autistic 9-12 year olds to learn about autism, connect with others with similar experiences, and learn skills for navigating school, family, and social situations. Group members are encouraged to embrace authentic movement, speech, and communication strategies in a safe, supportive environment.

Parents of Autistic and ADHD Youth

This virtual group is intended for parents of autistic and ADHD youth. It’s an inclusive space where parents can learn about autism and ADHD from a neurodiversity perspective, and explore effective strategies and accommodations for home, school, and social settings that respect and affirm their child’s unique neurological makeup. Participants will explore fostering healthy identity development and equip parents with tools to support their children in their journey of self-discovery and acceptance.

Day/Time: Mondays 5:00 PM – 5:50 PM via ZOOM

Teen ADHD/Autism Group

This group provides a neurodiversity affirming space for autistic and ADHD 14-17 year olds in which members share and explore their passions, interests, and identities, fostering connections with similar neurotype peers. Group members are encouraged to embrace authentic movement, speech, and communication strategies in a safe, supportive environment.

Day/Time: Wednesdays 5:30 PM – 6:20 PM via ZOOM

Child Neurodiversity Group

This virtual group provides a neurodiversity affirming space for neurodivergent 10-13 year olds to learn about autism, connect with others with similar experiences, and learn skills for navigating school, family, and social situations. Group members are encouraged to embrace authentic movement, speech, and communication strategies in a safe, supportive environment.

Day/Time: Thursdays 5:30 PM – 6:15 PM via ZOOM

Neurodiversity Parent Groups

Group 1

This 10 week virtual group is intended for parents and caregivers of neurodivergent youth of all ages. Formal diagnosis of the child is not required. Group members will identify areas of interest and learning goals, and each group session will include education and discussion. Participants will learn about neurodiversity with a special focus on autism and ADHD and develop strategies for helping neurodiverse families thrive. Participants will also develop strategies for coping with the challenges associated with caregiving in neurodiverse families.

Day/Time: Mondays 12:00pm-12:45pm via ZOOM

Group 2

This group is intended for parents of autistic and ADHD youth. Parenting Preschool & Elementary School Children with Big Behaviors

This group is for parents interested in learning new strategies to support their preschool and elementary school aged children manage behaviors that arise from big feelings. There will be a psychoeducation component to group to support parentings understanding why children engage in unsafe or acting out behaviors when they experience big feelings. Examples of behaviors of focus include physical/verbal aggression, bullying, task refusal, and breaking items.

Navigating Young Adulthood

 This virtual group will meet weekly to provide a space to navigate the ups and downs of the transition into young adulthood.  Themes of identity, basic needs, and life changes will be topics that will be addressed in a safe an interactive space. We will use a combination of talk, art, and virtual activities, along with some sessions providing direct support with basic living needs that may be applicable to group members (ie. Registering to vote, learning processes for applying for individual benefits, etc.).  Group members will be active participants in setting the weekly agendas based on group/individual needs and ones journey within the transition into young adult hood.  By the end of group, members will have a resource guide to support their journey further.

Coming to Balance: A DBT Journey

This educational and supportive, processing group is for high school teens who struggle to control their emotions and behaviors. This group will last until June 2025 offering teens a safe space to learn new strategies and concepts in Dialectical Behavior Therapy. They will reflect on how dysregulation of their emotions and behaviors lead to difficulties in their relationships, sense of self and day-to-day experiences. They will learn strategies to support mindfulness, distress tolerance, radical acceptance, perspective shifts, emotion regulation, and communication. The goal in learning these skills is to increase teen’s self-awareness, increase pleasurable activities and emotions, reduce impulsive or maladaptive behaviors, build self-respect, and improve or maintain relationships.

Preschool Social Skills Group

 The Preschool Social Skills group is a play-based space for children who attend CLC to receive developmentally appropriate social, emotional, and mental support as they navigate peer relationships within the group context. Areas of focus will include cooperative play, effective communication, self-confidence, problem solving, and more. Groups will be no more than 4 children at a time to allow individualized attention tailored to your child’s strengths and areas for growth.
